What is a Z136 Standard?

The Z136 series of standards are the United States national consensus standards for laser safety. They describe maximum permissible exposures to lasers along with required engineering and administrative control measures. Also included in the Standards are methodologies for properly assessing the hazards associated with exposure to lasers. These standards are voluntary consensus standards. Consensus means substantial agreement has been reached by directly and materially affected parties. This signifies the concurrence of more than a simple majority, but not necessarily unanimity. Consensus requires that all views and objections be considered, and that an effort be made toward their resolution. The process by which a standard or recommended practice has been developed may be approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) after consensus has been reached, thus designating it an American National Standard, until it is either superseded or withdrawn.
